Mulled Wine

  • 1 bottle cheap red wine
  • 3 - 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 - 5 whole cloves
  • 4 - 5 whole allspice
  • zest from a large orange
  • 1 - 2 whole star anise
  • 1/2 - 3/4 cup sugar (to taste)
  • 1/2 cup dark rum
Combine all the ingredients except the rum. Slowly, over low heat, heat through for 5 to 10 minutes -- do not boil or simmer! It should just barely steam. Then remove from the heat and add rum.
